A blindfolded woman holds the scales of justice, standing in a scene that sets the timeless beside the everyday. She is the figure of Justice, but the painter takes her out of the courthouse and places her in front of a real city. Glass towers and modern buildings rise behind her, a blue and white flag catches the wind, and the mountains close off the valley under a sky heavy with storm. Further down, beside the arches of an old stone bridge, the mood shifts: modest homes appear, and people living on the edge of all that distant prosperity. The whole painting turns on that contrast. On one side, the judge's gavel and a worn centavo coin resting on the wood; on the other, a horn spilling over with fruit and a machete, the work of the land. The scales hang right in the middle, between what is left over and what is missing. The oil on canvas is built up with careful realism. The gold brocade of the dress, the metallic shine of the chains, the texture of stone and fruit: every detail invites a closer look. Light comes in low from the left, breaks through the clouds, and leaves the woman's face in shadow, as if justice were looking without quite seeing. More than an allegory, the work raises an uncomfortable question about the balance between wealth and poverty, and about the distance between the law and the lives of ordinary people. It is the kind of piece you stand in front of for a while.
