T wo Lenca women stand waiting, dressed in their everyday clothes. Neither looks ahead: one adjusts the green scarf on her head, the other, seen in profile, raises a hand to her mouth, lost in thought. It is a market scene caught without a pose, as if the painter had come upon them in the middle of the morning. The clothing is what catches the eye first. Wide skirts in pinks and florals, sweaters in blue and turquoise, colored scarves tied over the hair, layers of fabric that carry a whole tradition. One of the women has a woven palm basket slung over her shoulder, striped in blue and red with a cross marked on one side, ready for the day's shopping. The oil on canvas is painted with detailed realism over a dark, warm background. That shadow brings out the color of the clothing and the texture of every cloth: the knit of the sweater, the folds of the skirt, the fibers of the basket. The light is spread gently, letting the figures hold the whole scene. The title, Lenca Market, places the work at the heart of indigenous life: market day, when the women head out with their baskets to buy and sell. More than a portrait, it speaks of identity and of the worth of those who keep their customs alive in every small daily gesture.
