A young girl balances a turquoise plastic basin on her head, full of ripe fruit. She holds the handle with one raised arm, while her other hand barely touches her chin, a shy little gesture. She smiles sweetly, looking straight ahead, and that smile sits against the weight she carries: she is almost a child vendor, used from an early age to earning her day. She wears a lilac dress with a gathered collar and a blue sash tied at the waist. The plain fabric, the worn basin, and the piled fruit tell you, without a word, where she comes from and what she does. Behind her, a green background with a yellow glow wraps her in a warm light, almost like open country. The oil on canvas is done with a tender, luminous realism. The painter looks after every detail: the shine of the basin, the loose strands of hair, the lit skin of her face and of her straining arm. Light falls on the girl and lifts her off the background, so that all the attention goes to her expression. The work is, above all, a portrait of working childhood: of those children who carry grown-up responsibilities without losing their tenderness. In her eyes there is tiredness and joy at once, and a quiet dignity that makes this little girl impossible to forget.
