T his work is a tribute to the literature of Honduras, set up as a still life on a poet's desk. On the wooden table sit old books with gilded edges, an inkwell with a white quill ready to write, a pair of round eyeglasses beside a pen, a rolled parchment, and several sheets covered in handwriting. A pocket watch hangs from its chain and brings the passing of time into the scene. On the wall behind, held up with tape, the mementos of the craft gather together: book covers, verses written by hand, an image of laborers, and the portraits of a male and a female writer, the woman resting her hand on her cheek, deep in thought. Each piece of paper looks cut from a literary history that is still alive. The oil on canvas is done with careful realism and a warm light falling over the desk. The gleam of the gold on the books, the white of the quill, the texture of old paper and wood: everything is painted with an almost jeweler's care, while the background fades into shadow. More than a still life, Honduran Writers is a homage to those who gave Honduras a voice through literature. The quill, the books, and the portraits form a small altar to memory, a tribute to the words that outlive the people who wrote them.
