Still life
I n the shadow of a dark background, the light picks out a few fruits of the earth and makes them shine as if they were gold. This is a still life built the old way: nearly everything stays in shadow, and only what matters comes forward into the light: the squash, the peppers, the clay. That darkness does not empty the scene; far from it, it makes the whole thing solemn, like the inside of an old pantry at dusk. At the center, a few small orange squash rest in a bowl of fired clay, their skin ribbed and gleaming. Beside them, another squash lies cut open, showing its inside of seeds and fibers, the open flesh from which life comes. In front, on an embroidered white cloth, red chilies and peppers pile up in a burning color, still carrying the wet shine of a fresh harvest. Behind, a clay jug and a blue blanket close off the corner, somewhere between the rustic and the intimate. The oil on canvas works the material with an almost tactile texture. You can feel the rough rind of the squash, the fibrous pulp of the cut, the taut skin of the chilies, and the coarse weave of the cloth. Each surface returns the light in its own way, and the painter follows it patiently, stopping at every reflection like someone who does not want to miss a single detail. This work belongs to the old school of still life, the kind in which humble food is painted with the respect kept for important things. The cut squash, its seeds in plain view, reminds us that even in the simplest part of the harvest lies the cycle of life: the earth that gives, opens, and begins again. It is a painting of quiet abundance, the abundance of a country table rather than of luxury: a hushed richness, the kind that holds up daily life. Looking at it stirs something old, a gratitude for what the earth offers, season after season.
