Still life
A carpenter's tools rest on a worn wooden bench, left just as they were at the end of the day. No one is in the scene, and yet the trade shows in every object. This is a still life, but it is also the portrait of a craft and of the person who practices it. Two generations of tools share the bench. An old hand plane and wooden-handled chisels sit beside a circular saw, a drill, and other modern machines. The open red toolbox, the hammer, the tape measure, the clamps: every piece carries its marks and its wear. Against the brick wall at the back, planks wait for the next job. The oil on canvas is painted with an almost photographic precision, in the tradition of the old still lifes. Warm light comes in from one side and shapes each surface: the metal edge, the rough wood, the plastic of the machines, the shine of copper. Everything else falls into shadow, and that darkness makes the tools stand out like the subjects of a portrait. More than a group of objects, The Master's Workshop speaks of the worth of a trade and the hands that keep it alive. The tools tell their owner's story: the years of work and the pride of doing things well. It is a piece for anyone who knows that a workshop has a soul of its own.
