Still life

O n a brightly colored cloth of red and yellow, a few garden vegetables are arranged. A pale squash stands at the back, and in front of it gather a curly lettuce, a red onion, a green bell pepper, and a long chili reaching off to one side. Behind them, barely suggested in the shadow, a gilded frame leans against the wall. That detail is no accident. The old frame and the rich cloth surround the vegetables as if they were treasure, lifting the everyday to the level of classical painting. The humble and the noble share the same table. The oil on canvas lingers on textures: the crisp ruffles of the lettuce, the smooth, glossy skin of the onion, the coarse weave of the cloth and the threads that run through it. Light comes in from the side, makes each surface shine, and leaves the rest in shadow, as in the still lifes of old. The title, Lenca Still Life, adds an indigenous root to the scene: the warm colors of the textile point to the tradition of the Lenca people and tie the art of the loom to the fruits of the land. It is a work that finds beauty in simple things and treats it with the respect owed to a museum still life.
