I t is early and the market is already in motion. In the foreground, a young man in a green t-shirt pushes his wooden handcart down the concrete aisle. The load is tied down and wrapped in plastic, ready to deliver. A yellow plate on the cart shows a number: the one that sets him apart from the other porters who work here every day. Behind him the whole market opens up. Stalls under blue tarps, tables lined with plastic, and at the back a flood of flowers and fruit burning with color under the light. Another worker bends over his load. Market life keeps moving, everyone busy with their own task. The oil on canvas catches this everyday moment with a warm realism. The green shirt lifts the young man out of the noise behind him, and the painter looks after every detail: the worn tire, the wood of the cart, the sheen of the plastic, the blurred faces of those working further back. More than a market scene, Market Day is a tribute to humble work and the people who carry it. This young man who loads and pushes, day after day, is the one who keeps the wheel of everyday commerce turning. It is an image anyone who has crossed a town or city market will recognize.
