A Day in the Fields

Rural landscape in oil on canvas by Honduran artist Enmanuel Membreño: a great tree rises beside a tile-roofed house in the countryside. The house has white walls and a clay tile roof, with colorful laundry hanging out front and a banana plant at its side. In the foreground, three farmworkers in hats tend the soil among the crops. Behind them, the green hillside climbs toward a gray sky where mist veils the tallest trees. The tree dominates the composition with its broad trunk and spreading crown, in a range of greens from the dark foliage to the bright grass. The scene portrays country life with calm and detail.
